If you are starting university or college soon, you’re not too far away from doing the first ‘big shop’. This is your first full shop to set yourself up and get all of the essentials you’ll be needing for the year ahead. We have created the ultimate uni shopping list for you, all you’ll need to do is screenshot the lists and take them with you on your phone. You’re welcome.
Top tips before you go shopping.
- Shop at the right place. Look for a local supermarket. Corner shops are expensive and you pay for the convenience. Can’t get to a local supermarket or worried you will struggle with all the bags? Why don’t you order your shopping online and book a delivery slot.
- Remember to take bags before you leave. If you don’t have any, buy a few bags for life from the store that you can use over and over throughout the year for your shopping.
- Eat before you go. Did you know if you go food shopping on an empty stomach you are more likely to spend more money on snacks and foods you don’t need.
- Check what storage space you have ️ before (how many shelves in the fridge/freezer, how many drawers in the cupboard).
- Consider your budget and dietary requirements.

There are many options when it comes to fruit and vegetables, we have listed a few options to help you get started. It is best to buy seasonally as this will keep prices at their lowest. There are also a few ways to buy fruit and vegetables…
Fresh – the most popular option, but can be the most expensive and have a limited shelf life.
Tinned – great to cook with and will last longer than fresh produce (and usually cheaper).
Frozen – As soon as fruit and vegetables are picked, they can start to lose nutrients and vitamins. It can take some time for them to be delivered to shops, plus time in the shop and then in your kitchen before you eat them. Frozen fruit and vegetables are frozen shortly after they’ve been picked and this helps to preserve the nutrients until you eat them.

Cook together with your new flat mates.
If you’re moving in to student accommodation and in particular a shared flat, why don’t you cook together? This is a great opportunity to get to know one another, as well as show off your skills.
