The Coal Yard

The Coal Yard is perfectly placed in the heart of York on Mansfield Street (YO31 7AJ). There are two buildings within a 30 second walk of each other on the same street.

You’re just a short walk from York St John University and well connected to the University of York by bus. The city centre, shops, cafés and transport links are all close by – so whether you’re heading to lectures or exploring York, everything’s within easy reach.

We offer a range of room types to suit different lifestyles and budgets:

• En-suite rooms in shared flats – your own private bathroom with shared kitchen and living space
• Standard Plus En-suite rooms – offering a little extra space
• Self-contained studios – your own private kitchen, bathroom and living area

All rooms are fully furnished with a comfortable bed, study desk and chair, plenty of storage, and everything you need to feel at home from day one.

• En-suite rooms from: £185.00 per week (depending on room type, academic year and contract length)
• Studios from: £205.00 per week (depending on type, features, academic year and contract length)

So whether you want your own space or a comfy studio vibe, there’s something to suit your style.

Yes – all utility bills are included. Your rent covers electricity, heating, water, a Wi-Fi, so there are no hidden extras or separate accounts to manage. Contents insurance is also included in your rent automatically.

Nope – we don’t take a deposit or booking fee. You’ll just pay a small advance rent payment when booking. This isn’t an extra payment – it goes towards your first rent instalment (if you’re paying in full) or your second rent instalment (if you are paying by instalment plan). Simple, stress-free, done.

If you’re paying in instalments, you’ll need a UK-based guarantor. If that’s tricky, we might be able to help with alternatives like upfront payments or third-party guarantor services — just speak to us early. Find out more in our payment and guarantor guide. 

Absolutely. If you’re booking with friends, let us know at the time of booking and we’ll do our best to place you together in the same flat. Booking early gives you the best chance of securing rooms close to each other.

Super safe! The Coal Yard has staff cover from 9am-5pm and out of hours security on call, so help is always around if you need it. Plus, there’s secure key-fob access and CCTV in communal areas. You can feel confident knowing the building is designed with student safety in mind.

Life’s more fun with hangout spots. The Coal Yard offers welcoming shared spaces where you can relax, study and meet other residents, including communal lounges, dedicated study areas, games and social spaces a rooftop terrace and secure bike storage.

Whether you prefer quiet study time or social evenings, there’s space for both.

Absolutely! We run events and activities throughout the year to help you settle in and meet other residents. From welcome events to seasonal socials, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved (if you’d like to).

You’ll find our friendly property team on-site 9am-5pm Monday to Friday. Outside of these hours and on the weekends, our Security team will be on hand to help.
