With our brand-new site, The Croft, opening in the city in September, we’ve pulled together a list of some of the top things to do in Derby to get you started. No matter what your hobbies and interests, you’re sure to find something fun to do in your free time as a student.
Whether it’s the latest fashion fix or the biggest blockbuster movie, head to Derby’s ultimate retail destination, intu Derby. You’ll find everything you need under one roof. From high street stores for fashion, home, stationary, books, electronics and more, to a cinema, bowling and even adventure golf!
And the shopping doesn’t stop there. Make your way to the Cathedral Quarter where you’ll find even more top brands as well as a fantastic range of independent shops including one of our favourites, Design 44, for those quirky and one-off pieces.
Feeling hungry? If not, you definitely will be after checking out some of the tasty places to eat in the city. Popular with students and famous for their wings, Bunk Wings and Cocktails offers an alternative dining experience – you can even order a box of your favourite chocolates for afters!
Whether it’s a quick coffee in between lectures or a post-uni drink to unwind after a busy day, BEAR is the place to be. More than a coffee shop and located slap-bang in the centre of Derby’s Cathedral Quarter, it offers a refreshing alternative to the traditional pub or bar.
Head to Annie’s Burger Shack for a taste of America. With meat, veggie and vegan options available, Annie sure does cater for everyone.
And if there’s one thing you don’t want to miss, it’s the Bustler Market. Held on the last weekend of every month, treat yourself to some amazing street-food, great music and a well-stocked bar.
Take some time out to learn about the history of the city you’ll be living in. First stop, the city’s beautiful, grade I listed cathedral church. Derby Cathedral is the most visited attraction in Derby, and whilst you’re there you might catch glimpse of some peregrine falcons which have nested there.
Another must-see in the city is the Museum and Art Gallery. Explore ancient artefacts and mummies in the Ancient Egyptian Collection, find fascinating military and personal artefacts in the Soldier’s Story exhibition and admire the amazing masterpieces in the Joseph Wright Gallery where the work of the internationally renowned artist is displayed.
Download a Hairy Dog? No, that’s not what we mean. We’re talking about one of Derby’s most popular live music venues (Hairy Dog) and the UK’s premier rock festival (Download).
The Hairy Dog is located in the heart of the city and is home to a whole host of touring bands. With an impressive stage and a range of beverages, the 400-capacity venue has got to be given a visit at least once whilst in Derby.
Ok, so Download Festival isn’t in Derby itself, but it’s that close, it’s worthy of a mention. Just a few miles out of the city and easy to reach by bus or car, if you’re looking for a rock festival on your doorstep this is it.
Rock music not your thing? Perhaps give the Y NOT Festival a go instead. With rolling hills, gorgeous scenes and a whole load of indie goodness it’s the perfect end to a busy year of university.
