4 top travel discounts for students

We’re pretty confident in saying that most people love a bargain – especially students! Let’s face it, the more you can save on one thing, the more you’ve got to spend on something else.

And if there’s one thing we’re often reluctant to pay for, it’s the cost of travel. As much as we enjoy visiting family or friends, does it really have to cost a small fortune to get there?

Yes, the cost of getting from A to B isn’t something we like to spend our money on. So, before you go breaking the bank for your next journey, take note of some of these top student travel discounts so you can make great savings.

1. 18+ Student Oyster Card

If you’re living in or around London, one of the main transport networks across the city is The London Underground (aka the tube). And getting around is made even easier and cheaper if you have an Oyster card.

The Oyster card is a re-usable plastic card – the same size as a debit or credit card, which you can load money onto and simply swipe to get in and out of tube stations. Alternatively, you can purchase a monthly or weekly travel card, and this will be added onto your Oyster card.

But did you know as a student living in London you can get 30% off the price of adult-rate Travelcards as well as Bus & Tram season tickets? All you need to do is apply for an 18+ Student Oyster photocard.

2. 16-25 Railcard

Whether you’re visiting family, taking a day trip out the city or attending a weekend festival, if you’re travelling by train, why not invest in a 16-25 Railcard?

If you’re aged between 16 and 25 you can save 1/3 off rail fares; making an average saving of £199 a year! Plus, if you’re a mature student in full-time study you can apply for a discount card too.

The Railcard will cost you just £30 a year; so in just a few trips the card will have easily paid for itself. And if you want to make an even bigger saving, you can pay £70 up front for a three-year Railcard; that’s the equivalent of just £23.33 a year!

3. Young Persons Coachcard

One of the most flexible and low-cost ways to travel across the UK can often be by coach. And thanks to National Express, coach travel is even cheaper if you’re aged 16-26 or are a full-time student.

All you need to do is invest in a Young Persons Coachcard; the card will cost you just £12.50 a year or £30 for three years. Once you have the card, you’ll get 1/3 off all Standard and Fully Flexible fares. What’s more, you can even save 15% off the cost of travel to events and festivals.

4. International Student Identity Card

If you’re a full-time student, you can save money in the UK and when you’re travelling abroad with an International Student Identity Card (ISIC).

The ISIC card is the only internationally recognised student ID card. It gives you access to over 150,000 discounts around the world including offers on travel, shopping, accommodation, food, entertainment and transport.

For just £12 a year for a virtual card (or £15 for a plastic card), the ISIC card could be a good investment!
