1st weekends with your flatmates at university

The first few days after moving into your new student home will probably be busy with unpacking, figuring out your local amenities and saying lots of hellos to everyone you meet. Luckily you can look forward to the first few weekends living together with your new flatmates as a time to relax and enjoy your new environment. It’s time to go out and have fun. There’s no end to the options available to you – going all out or just having a chilled time. Just take things at your own pace.

Key to the heart.

Students love food, it’s just a fact. Go out for food together or plan to cook a meal together. You could even book a dining suite if your accommodation has one (like at Southampton Crossings). You don’t have to make it too complicated – find something everyone is happy to eat and offer to contribute.

Always ask if a bar or restaurant offer student discount – around move in some places may have deals available to attract new students so remember to check out what they have to offer.

Go to your local pub.

It’s time to find yourself the best local pub to park yourself for the foreseeable. See if they’re having an open mic night or a local band playing. You could even try and make your way around a few places if you’re feeling up to it.

You could even make your own version of a pub crawl and see how many you manage to hit (good luck!).

How’s your competitive streak?

One of the best ways to break the ice with your new flatmates is with some healthy competition! A game of bowling or crazy golf is perfect for laughs and some fun and isn’t too expensive. Many places also offer student discount so don’t forget to ask.

Have a movie night.

Grab some microwave popcorn and your favourite films (or better yet, someone with a working Netflix subscription).

Make use of your new space straight away.

Plan to hang out in your communal areas if you want to keep things low key. Play some board games or even order some food. Have a pamper night with facemasks and some yummy snacks. Or even have someone make the ultimate trivia quiz and gather as many people as possible into teams. Some of our Host locations have cool karaoke rooms where you can impress with your singing skills, or not. It’s all a bit of fun.

Taking part in fun activities in your student home really is the best place to connect with your flatmates.
