It is very appropriate for 20th March to be chosen as International Day of Happiness – the weather is starting to get warmer as we jump into spring.
You may now be getting in the swing of things in terms of uni exam season, and that bond with your flat/classmates is stronger than ever.
The tagline for IDOH is Be Mindful. Be Grateful. Be Kind – We can create a happier and kinder world together by adopting simple, daily practices.
So, what small part can we play on International Day of Happiness?
Think about where you are at the moment. Who do you interact with daily/weekly? What is the tone of those interactions? Is there a way of showing more kindness? Can you make someone’s day with a small gesture?
We can’t make big change alone; we all need to do our part so that collectively real progress can be made. This also means our interactions online – it can be easy to hide behind your keyboard and make certain comments when we see something we don’t agree with – but are those comments adding positivity?
- Being kind releases happy hormones like endorphins and oxytocin – key for your immune system and even your self-esteem.
- You can boost these hormones through exercise and eating small quantities of dark chocolate, along with eggs, milk and nuts.
- Laughter is the best medicine – get together with your mates and watch your favourite comedies or plan an activity day – if fun is on the cards, laughter should follow.
- Setting goals for yourself, whether that’s volunteering for a good cause or planning to be more sociable this year
