UCAS application submitted? What’s next?
Now that the 2021 entry deadline for all UCAS undergraduate course applications has passed and your application has been submitted, you can breathe a sigh of relief. But what do you need to do next?
1. Wait for your offers
In terms of your application, there’s nothing more you can do right now. You just have to sit tight and wait patiently for the universities you’ve applied to to make their decisions and reply.
Some universities will make their decision fairly soon after they receive your application. However, if you don’t hear back straight away don’t panic. Universities have until 20th May 2021 to respond. If after this date a university hasn’t decided, your application for that university will automatically be made unsuccessful by UCAS.
2. Understand your offers
When a university replies to you with their decision, they will reply with one of several offers: a conditional offer or an unconditional offer. But what do these offers mean?
If you receive a conditional offer, it means that although the uni are offering you a place, they still require you to meet certain criteria before that place is confirmed. These requirements are usually based on your exam results and that you need to achieve certain grades.
If you receive an unconditional offer, it means that your offer has been accepted and the place on the course is yours if you want it.
If a university decides not to offer you a place on the course, your application will show as unsuccessful. Should the uni not give you a reason as to why your application was unsuccessful, you can contact them to discuss further.
3. Make your decisions
Once you’ve heard back from all of the universities you’ve applied to, and all your offers are in, it’s time to make your decisions as outlined below:
- Select your Firm choice – this is your preferred and first-choice university/course.
- Select an Insurance choice – if your firm choice is a conditional offer, you should choose another of your offers as a back-up in case you don’t get your firm choice confirmed.
- Decline any other offers – once your firm and insurance choices have been made, make sure you decline any other offers you have received.
All your offers should be replied to by 10th June 2021.
4. Wait for Results Day
Now, all you have to do is wait for Results Day to see if your conditional offer is confirmed. If your offer is an unconditional one, your place is already confirmed but you might want to double check if anything else is required.
Should you not get the grades required for your conditional or insurance offer to be confirmed, you can apply for alternative courses through UCAS Clearing. And don’t forget if you do better than expected in your results, you can apply for a different uni/course through adjustment.

5. Start your student accommodation search
Whilst you wait for your offers to come flooding in, why not take the time now to do some research on where you might live if your offers get accepted? You might feel it’s too soon, but it’s always good to know what your options are.
And when it comes to reserving your accommodation, being an early bird can have its benefits. The earlier you book, the more likely you are to snap up your preferred room type and accommodation building; rather than being left with a lack of choice and having to settle for second best.
