Heading down South for uni? Here’s our guide to Southampton.

So you’ve chosen to go to University in Southampton – the city on the south coast of England? Cool! But remember, there’s more to living in Southampton than just studying and taking in the fresh sea air. That’s why we’ve put together a quick guide to some of the top must-see and do things while you’re a student in the city.

1. Shop ‘til you drop

What city would be complete without some top shops to spend your student loan in? And in Southampton you won’t be disappointed. For fashion and beauty, or tasty treats and delicious restaurants, make your way down to Westquay shopping centre – dubbed the south coast’s premier shopping destination. Or, if you’re looking for something a little more traditional, head across town to the north of the city to Bedford Place. Here you’ll find small and independent boutique shops, bars, restaurants and much more.

2. Support The Saints

Whether you’re a huge football fan or not, what better way to make yourself at home in your new city than to support your local club? That’s why a trip to watch Premier League football team Southampton F.C (nicknamed ‘The Saints’) in action at St Mary’s Stadium is well worth a visit. And if you’re aged 18-21, tickets are available from just £19!

3. Relax at the marina

Soak up the bustling atmosphere and admire the yachts docked up in the marina at Ocean Village. Start the afternoon with a cocktail or two at Banana Wharf, then suffice your appetite with a bite to eat at Maritimo Lounge. And after all that, why not squeeze in the time to catch the latest blockbuster at the cinema?

4. Take a trip back in time

Take some time out to discover the hidden history of the city with a guided tour around Southampton. For just £5 you can enjoy a 90 minute walking tour where you’ll walk the walls, visit medieval vaults and towers, and learn about the city’s historic associations with everything from The Romans to WW2. Then, when friends or family ask about life in your new city, you’ll be all clued up to fill them in!

5. Escape the city

So you’re new to the city, and now we’re telling you to leave? Well, we don’t mean for good. It’s just while you’re living here, it’s the perfect opportunity to discover some of the surrounding sites. Hop on the ferry and explore the Isle of Wight’s beautiful beaches and distinctive landscapes, or take a trek through the woods and experience the peace and tranquillity of The New Forest.
