Are you applying for university for next September? If so, you are probably familiar with UCAS and the application process.
Whilst studying for A Levels at Sixth Form or College is a lot to keep on top of, it is essential to meet UCAS’ key deadlines.
To ensure you send off your application within the correct dates, we have listed the important UCAS application dates for the upcoming year, so you can make a note of them and add them to your calendar. If you are a little unsure with the terminology used check out our UCAS Application Terminology Cheat sheet.
Important dates for UCAS applications.

If you are applying to Oxford or Cambridge University.
- The deadline for applications is the 16th October 2024 at 6pm
If you are also applying to other Universities and course, you can still apply to the later deadline for those.
UCAS application deadline for other courses.
- The deadline for applications is the 31st January 2024 at 6pm

We have listed other important dates to keep in mind throughout 2024 during your UCAS application.
UCAS Extra Opens.
If you have used all five choices and are yet to receive an offer, you can add another choice using Extra.
Last date for receipt of applications with choices.
Applications received after this date are moved into Clearing.
UCAS Extra Closes.
Clearing Opens.
Clearing is a system by UCAS and UK universities at the end of the academic year to fill course places that haven’t been taken.
A Level Results Day.
At 8am and not a minute before, UCAS Track will go live and will show the decisions made by your chosen university.

Submitting a UCAS application is just the beginning of the process. We have outlined the process of your application so you know what to expect throughout the year.
Apply online.
- UCAS Hub – a service from UCAS that lets you see how your university applications are progressing, accept interview invitations or offers, and reply to universities about your offers.
Their reply.
Universities/colleges will respond to your application with a range of replies:
- Unconditional offer – No matter what your exam results the university have accepted you to their course.
- Conditional offer – Based on certain exam results, you are pre accepted to the course
- Unsuccessful – You have not been successful.
Time to reply to offers.
- Select a firm choice – select your firm choice
- Insurance choice – select your insurance choice. This is usually a course that has a lower requirement of a conditional offer.
- Decline offers – if you have a change of mind you can decline offers.
Get your student accommodation sorted before the rush.

Why not take the time to research where you might like to live if your offers get accepted. You might feel it’s too soon, but it’s always good to know what your options are.
And when it comes to reserving your accommodation, being an early bird can have its benefits. The earlier you book, the more likely you are to snap up your preferred room type and accommodation building; rather than being left with a lack of choice and having to settle for second best.
