Where should I live in my second year of uni?
With your first year of university well underway, it won’t be long before you’re no longer a fresher. And whilst it might still be months away, your second year of uni will be here before you know it.
So, have you started thinking about where you’re going to live for your second year? If not, now is the perfect time to start searching and weighing up your options. First year’s aim to have their second year accommodation sorted before Term 2 (January). Below are some things to consider when choosing your second-year accommodation.
Should I live in a house or halls for my second year of uni?
Traditionally, students would live in uni halls for their first year, then for the remaining years they would be left to find their own accommodation; which would normally be a privately rented house share.
However, times have changed. Nowadays, students choose to live in purpose-built student accommodation – such as Host’s, for the duration of their time at university.
There are many reasons why you might want to opt for accommodation like Host instead of a shared house for your second or third year; here are a few of them.
All bills included student accommodation.
When renting a house, household bills aren’t usually included in your contract. And sorting out bills and paying them can be one of the worst parts about living in a shared house, especially with utility bills rising.
First off you’ll need to ring around all the utility suppliers and set up the accounts, then you’ll need to figure out with your housemates who’s going to, and how you’re going to, pay them. And that’s before you’ve even considered calling out an engineer to set up your internet and Wi-Fi connection.

Most university cities and towns have established student areas with houses regularly occupied by students. So, the good news is, if you opt for a house share you’ll be surrounded by like-minded people. However, these areas are usually located out of city centres and can be a bit of a distance to university and local amenities.
Whereas with Host, you’ll find our properties located close to the buzz of city centres and university campuses. In fact, some are so close, you can roll out of bed and straight into lectures.
