Where should I live in my second year of uni?
With your first year of university well underway, it won’t be long before you’re no longer a fresher. And whilst it might still be months away, your second year of uni will be here before you know it.
So, have you started thinking about where you’re going to live for your second year? If not, now is the perfect time to start searching and weighing up your options. First year’s aim to have their second year accommodation sorted before Term 2 (January). Below are some things to consider when choosing your second-year accommodation.
Should I live in a house or halls for my second year of uni?
Traditionally, students would live in uni halls for their first year, then for the remaining years they would be left to find their own accommodation; which would normally be a privately rented house share.
However, times have changed. Nowadays, students choose to live in purpose-built student accommodation – such as Host’s, for the duration of their time at university.
There are many reasons why you might want to opt for accommodation like Host instead of a shared house for your second or third year; here are a few of them.
All bills included student accommodation.
When renting a house, household bills aren’t usually included in your contract. And sorting out bills and paying them can be one of the worst parts about living in a shared house, especially with utility bills rising.
First off you’ll need to ring around all the utility suppliers and set up the accounts, then you’ll need to figure out with your housemates who’s going to, and how you’re going to, pay them. And that’s before you’ve even considered calling out an engineer to set up your internet and Wi-Fi connection.
Wouldn’t it be easier if you just paid your rent and that’s all you had to worry about? Well, when living with Host, that’s what happens. All bills are included in the rent, so you just make one payment to us and we do the rest. So, that’s your utility bills covered as well as the Wi-Fi and internet – in fact, you’ll even get free contents insurance too.
Live with your friends.
Students often opt for a house share in their second or third year so they can live together with friends. But did you know you can live with friends in our accommodation too?
Many of our properties have cluster flats available; meaning you and your friends can all live together in the same flat. Flat sizes vary across properties but can accommodate anything from two to thirteen people in the same flat. You’ll each have your own private bedroom and study space, but you’ll share the kitchen and living area.
Alternatively, if you’d rather a bit more privacy so you can get your head down for your final years, most of our properties have private studio rooms available. These come complete with your own en-suite bathroom, kitchen and living space.
The best student accommodation locations.
Most university cities and towns have established student areas with houses regularly occupied by students. So, the good news is, if you opt for a house share you’ll be surrounded by like-minded people. However, these areas are usually located out of city centres and can be a bit of a distance to university and local amenities.
Whereas with Host, you’ll find our properties located close to the buzz of city centres and university campuses. In fact, some are so close, you can roll out of bed and straight into lectures.
Quality furnished student accommodation.
If you know anyone who’s lived in a house share, you’ve probably heard them moan about the state of their house and maintenance problems. And whether it’s a leaky tap, a broken boiler or a dodgy appliance, they’ve probably waited an age to get it fixed too.
However, when you choose to live with Host, you’ll enjoy high quality and clean accommodation; ensuring you have a comfortable and stress-free living experience.
Our properties are furnished and fitted with modern and stylish fittings; some properties are brand-new and less than a year old! But should you experience any maintenance issues, we have on-site maintenance teams on hand ready to fix things for you as soon as possible.
Student spaces to socialise in.
If you can call a chat in the hallway as you fight over who’s next inline for the bathroom socialising, then a shared house is for you.
But if you’d prefer spacious and comfy spaces, dedicated for socialising in, then Host student accommodation is definitely for you!
Sit back, relax and catch up with friends in our lounge areas. Watch the latest blockbusters on the large TV screens or in the cinema rooms. Get your head down and focus in our study rooms. Enjoy some friendly competition in the game areas – from pool tables and foosball tables to Xbox consoles and Pac Man.
If you’re not done for the day and still have energy to burn, sweat it out with a workout in the complimentary on-site gym (no gym subscriptions – yay). And for those brighter days, soak up the sunshine or watch the sunset from our outdoor spaces.
Safe student accommodation.
Got a question? Have a problem? Maintenance issues? Parcel delivery? When you choose to live in purpose-built student accommodation, there’s always someone on hand to help, if you need it.
Even out of hours, our accommodations have security staff and caretaker cover; all assisted by 24/7 CCTV. As well as this, all properties are secure and can only be accessed via fob or key card.
So, you can rest assured knowing you’re in safe hands when you live with Host.
